Fire raged across Baltimore Monday night as riots and looting took hold in the wake of the funeral of Freddie Gray. Earlier in the day, a branch of CVS Pharmacy was burned down from the inside and looted along with several other local businesses.
During the unrest a masked rioter wearing a pink and grey sweater and a gas mask was caught on live TV undermining the efforts of firefighters by slashing a fire hose. The unidentified man then fled the scene, seemingly pleased with his act of sabotage.
The riots began on Monday in protest at the death of Freddie Gray. Gray was arrested on April 12 for possessing a switchblade. While being held in custody "without force or incident", he mysteriously suffered a serious spinal injury and damaged larynx. Gray died on April 19 after several surgeries failed to save him.
The shocking footage of the masked rioter thwarting the efforts of emergency workers was just several reported incidents of rioters attacking emergency services.
Looters were reported to have thrown cinder blocks at fire engines and police responding to the unrest. Maryland Governor Larry Hogan has called for the Maryland National Guard and has declared a state of emergency. A weeklong city wide curfew has also been imposed.
