A 10-year-old girl in San Antonio, Texas, came home with a really bad sunburn, prompting her mother to speak out against a school sunscreen ban, Fox News reported.

The ban affects all of the district's 72 schools, according to the report, and was put in place because district officials see sunscreen as being toxic and fear children would eat it.

Other reasons for the ban include allergies, with the worry students may share the product with each other.

In order to be allowed to bring sunscreen to school, a child must get a prescription, like any other medical substance from a pharmacy.

KCTV 5 further reported parents are advised to cover their children in sunscreen before they go to school if they will be outside that day.

Christy Riggs, the mother of the girl who got badly burnt, calls this ban ludicrous and wants to see it changed. A spokesperson for the school district said decisions such as these are reviewed each year and the sunscreen issue could possibly be revisited.
