A Russian jet flew dangerously close to a U.S. military plane in an April fly-by that a U.S. official described as "straight out of a movie."

The incident occurred during a routine U.S. mission over the Sea of Okhotsk between Russia and Japan on April 23. The Russian Su-27 Flanker intercepted the U.S. Air Force RC-135U plane, flying within 100 feet of the nose of U.S. aircraft. The Russian jet also turned its body so the U.S. crew could clearly see its missiles, Pentagon spokesman Colonel Steve Warren said.

"Difficult to know the pilot's reasoning but the effect was that the personnel on the (American plane) were able to see that the flanker was armed," Warren told reporters on Tuesday.

Reports said that U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu discussed the matter privately a phone call on April 28.
