WASHINGTON — Two Russian Sukhoi Su-24 fighter planes flew dangerously close to the USS Donald Cook on Tuesday in simulated attack passes, Reuters reported, citing the U.S. military.
One jet came within 9 meters of the vessel while flying at an altitude of 30 meters, reported the Guardian citing EUCOM spokesman Lt. Col. David Westover. An allied helicopter, reportedly Polish, was refuelling during landing drills at the time.
The aircraft that flew within 9 meters of the vessel flew so low that it created a wake in the water, a U.S. military official told Reuters.
The two jets are believed to have made 11 passes in total, and both appeared to have been unarmed. A Russian Ka-27 Helix helicopter also reportedly made seven passes around the warship, taking pictures.
The USS Donald Cook was located some 70 miles from Kaliningrad at the time of the encounter, reported Reuters. A small Russian enclave, Kaliningrad sits between NATO allies Lithuania and Poland.
