In Peru’s capital city of Lima, a mix of unemployment, informality and free market policies has led to over 200,000 people becoming taxi drivers in the city. All many taxi drivers do is put up a sign on their car. There are no set prices or taximeters. The cost of the ride is negotiated between the driver and the passenger. In this report we meet Manuel Villavicencio, who used to be a construction worker, but lost his job. He works 15 hours a day, 7 days a week, and must pay for gas and the rental of his cab. He’s been robbed twice. Despite job hazards and instability, he makes enough to support his family. teleSUR
