PARIS — Two suspects are dead and seven more were arrested in a raid early Wednesday morning targeting Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the suspected Belgian mastermind of Friday's Paris terrorist attacks.
The raid started at around 4:30 a.m. in the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis at an apartment on the Rue du Corbillon. Belgium's BMF TV reported that police first sent a dog inside the flat to ascertain the level of the threat inside. The dog was killed as it entered the apartment.
A woman inside the building was the first to open fire, before blowing herself up by detonating an explosive belt.
The raid ended at 11:37 a.m. with the arrest of seven people, BMF TV reported. Le Point said that three people were arrested inside the apartment, two in a neighboring flat and two more near the building. At least five policemen were slightly injured during the operation.
The whereabouts of Abdelhamid Abaaoud — a Belgian national and the suspected ringleader of Friday's attacks — and Salah Abdeslam — suspected of being one of the perpetrators of the attacks — remain unknown. It is unclear whether they were in the building or among those arrested or killed.
