There were long lines at polling stations on Wednesday, May 9, as Malaysians cast their votes in the country’s highly contested parliamentary elections.
Videos posted on social media showed lines at various polling stations since the early morning, and some said they had to wait for hours to vote.
Around 14 million Malaysians were registered to vote, and turnout was high, with 47 percent estimated at 12 pm. “Who said Malaysian citizens didn’t care?” the uploader of this video, @khawari1, wrote on Instagram.
Opposition politicians hope dissatisfied voters could help them oust the scandal-hit Prime Minister Najib Razak. The elections pit Najib’s ruling Barisan Nasional coalition against the opposition Pakatan Harapan, led by the 92-year-old former PM Mahathir Mohamad.
Some overseas voters complained of the late arrival of ballot papers, Channel News Asia said. Volunteers with Global Bersih and others on social media were offering to collect people’s stamped ballots and fly them back to Malaysia, from places like Australia and New Zealand.
