Karthik Nemmani, an American of Indian origin has won the 91st Scripps National Spelling Bee competition. The 14-year-old eigth grader from McKinney, Texas, won the competition after several rounds against fellow Texan Nayasa Modi, another Indian-American student. They were the final two competitors out of the initial 516 spellers at the end of the three days of the contest. Karthik is the 14th consecutive Indian-American champion, and 19 of the past 23 winners have had Indian heritage. In addition to the trophy, he gets more than 40,000 US dollars in cash and prizes.
