Saudi-led coalition forces and Houthi militias battled for control of the airport in the Yemeni port city of Hodeidah on June 17. Coalition airstrikes were reported by local witnesses and pro-Houthi media, which said civilians were killed.

Anwar Gargash, the foreign affairs minister of the UAE, part of the coalition, was quoted on June 18 as saying the fall of the airport was “just a matter of time” and that coalition troops were “advancing with caution.”

Hodeidah port is the main source of imports and food aid for Yemen. Adama Dieng, the United Nations’ special adviser on the prevention of genocide, said the fighting in Hodeidah could have “a potentially disastrous impact on civilians,” at least 10 million of whom are at risk of famine.
