Legal expert Alan Dershowitz has predicted that the report produced by special counsel Robert Mueller "is going to be devastating to the president."
The retired Harvard Law professor and frequent Trump defender made this comment on ABC News' "This Week" Sunday, adding, in part: "I know that the president's team is already working on a response to the report. And so at some point when the report is made public...it will be made public probably with a response alongside. The president will say, 'look, it's political. There's their account and there's our account,' and then the American public will have to judge their credibility."
Dershowitz later clarified: "When I say devastating, I mean it's going to paint a picture that's going to be politically very devastating. I still don't think it's going to make a criminal case because collusion is not criminal."
The discussion comes less than a week after attorneys for President Trump confirmed that he recently submitted written answers to Mueller's team.
While little is known about the president's responses other than that they were related to Russia, a forthcoming book titled, "Trump's Enemies: How the Deep State Is Undermining the Presidency," reveals that Trump has said he thinks the Mueller investigation has benefited him politically.
He reportedly told the authors, Corey Lewandowski and David Bossie, about the probe: "I think it makes my base stronger. I would have never said this to you. But I think the level of love now is far greater than when we won."
