Hundreds of protesters gathered at Hong Kong's High Court on October 6, 2019 to support jailed independence activist Edward Leung Tin-kei as he launched an appeal against his six-year prison term for rioting in 2016.  The 28-year-old was sentenced in June 2018 for taking part in the Mong Kok unrest in 2016, in which a protest against a crackdown on illegal street food hawkers on the first day of the Lunar New Year holiday turned violent.
