Virender Sehwag had started out as a middle-order batsman for India before Sourav Ganguly decided to use him as an opener in what proved to be a masterstroke from the former Indian captain. Sehwag, who is regarded as one of the most explosive openers of all time, revealed why Ganguly promoted him as an opener and what made him accept his captain's proposal. Sehwag made his international debut for India in April 1999 in an ODI against Pakistan under Ajay Jadeja's captaincy.

26 जुलाई 2001 को सहवाग पहली बार ट्रायल के तौर पर ओपनिंग करने उतरे. सहवाग ने बतौर ओपनर पहली पारी में 54 गेंदों में 33 रन बनाए लेकिन उसके बाद 2 पारियों में वो फ्लॉप रहे. हालांकि सौरव गांगुली ने सहवाग को पूरे टूर्नामेंट में ओपनिंग करने का भरोसा दिया था. 2 अगस्त 2001 को सहवाग ने न्यूजीलैंड के खिलाफ महज 70 गेंदों में 100 रन बनाकर तहलका मचा दिया. सहवाग का ये प्रयोग काम कर गया और उसके बाद सहवाग बतौर ओपनर ही टीम इंडिया में खेले. वनडे में बतौर ओपनर गजब की बल्लेबाजी करने के बाद सहवाग को टेस्ट में डेब्यू का मौका मिला. सहवाग ने अपने करियर के 5 टेस्ट मैच मिडिल ऑर्डर में ही खेले.
