The occasion of Independence Day always warrants some introspection as it gives one an occasion to evaluate how far we have come. 73 years on, there has been a sea change in the country, but then that would hold for all countries as the overall environment has changed quite radically in the last two decades. Besides being more prosperous, the world has turned less secure which is an anomaly because normally the two move in the same direction. This gives one a clue that the main problem is more on the non-economic front which raises broader questions. How can we judge ourselves here?

15 अगस्त 1947 को देश की आजादी की घटना महज एक राजनीतिक घटना नहीं थी. ये सिर्फ सत्ता का हस्तांतरनण नहीं था. ये सिर्फ एक विदेशी सरकार के जाने और अपनी सरकार आने की घटना नहीं थी. बल्कि ये एक देश के संपूर्ण मानव जीवन के संभावित अच्छे बदलाव की शुरुआत थी. देश की आजादी देश के हर मन में पल रहे आशाओं और उम्मीदों को पंख लगाने वाली घटना थी. देश नागरिकों में इस बात को लेकर जोरदार उत्‍साह और विश्वास था कि वे अपनी नियति को बदल कर रहेंगे, इसी का नतीजा हुआ कि हजार सालों के बाद गुलामी के चंगुल से आजाद होने वाला मुल्क समय रहते ना सिर्फ अपने पैरों पर खड़ा हो गया, बल्कि दुनिया में अपना जगह भी बनाने लगा.
