The history of Kumbh Mela is at least 850 years old. It is believed that Adi Shankaracharya started it, but according to some legends, Kumbh started from the beginning of the sea churning.

कुंभ मेले का इतिहास कम से कम 850 साल पुराना है. माना जाता है कि आदि शंकराचार्य ने इसकी शुरुआत की थी, लेकिन कुछ कथाओं के अनुसार कुंभ की शुरुआत समुद्र मंथन के आदिकाल से ही हो गई.
