According to astronomy, the festival of Makar Sankranti is celebrated on that day when the Sun moves from Dakshinayan to Uttarayan. This year the festival of Makar Sankranti will be celebrated on 15 January. According to the scriptures, when the Sun is in Dakshinayan, that period is called the night of the deities and the six months of Uttarayan are called days. Dakshinayan is considered a symbol of negativity and darkness and Uttarayan is considered a symbol of positivity and light. It is a belief that on the day of Makar Sankranti, the deities incarnate on the earth to receive the liquid offered in the yagya and through this path the pious souls leave their bodies and enter heaven etc. The charity done on this day is very fruitful.

ज्योतिष शास्त्र के मुताबिक जब सूर्य धनु राशि से मकर राशि में प्रवेश करते हैं, तब मकर संक्रांति मनाई जाती है. खगोलशास्त्र के मुताबिक देखें तो सूर्य जब दक्षिणायन से उत्तरायण होते हैं तो उस दिन मकर संक्रांति का पर्व मनाया जाता है. इस साल मकर संक्रांति का पर्व 15 जनवरी को मनाया जाएगा. शास्त्रों के अनुसार सूर्य जब दक्षिणायन में रहते हैं तो उस अवधि को देवताओं की रात व उत्तरायण के छह माह को दिन कहा जाता है. दक्षिणायन को नकारात्मकता और अंधकार का प्रतीक तथा उत्तरायण को सकारात्मकता एवं प्रकाश का प्रतीक माना गया है. ऐसी मान्यता है कि मकर संक्रांति के दिन यज्ञ में दिए द्रव्य को ग्रहण करने के लिए देवता धरती पर अवतरित होते हैं एवं इसी मार्ग से पुण्यात्माएं शरीर छोड़कर स्वर्ग आदि लोकों में प्रवेश करती हैं.इस दिन किया गया दान पुण्य काफी फलदायी होता है.
