U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told Libya's new leaders - the road to stability will not be easy after 42 years of one-man rule.
U.S. DEFENSE SECRETARY LEON PANETTA, SAYING:
"This will be a long and difficult transition, and I have every confidence that you will succeed in realizing the dream of a government of, by and for all people and achieve a more secure and prosperous future."
During the news conference with Libya's interim prime minister, Panetta said Washington is ready to help the oil-producing North African state but offered no specific aid.
Libya's interim government is struggling to stamp its authority two months after the capture and killing of Muammar Gaddafi.
Militias seized Tripoli during the rebellion against Gaddafi that drew NATO into an air war.
Heavily armed groups still control the streets and may be holding out for their share of power in Libya's new government.
