The Frog Prince Pines for Love Painting by Carolyn Oberst - as part of the series on arts by GeoBeats. I am Carolyn Oberst and this is called “The Frog Prince Pines for Love." So, the inspiration for this piece came from the central character here who I refer to as the frog prince. It was a toy that my husband gave to me a couple of years ago for Valentine's Day and there was something in the expression of the toy of the frog prince that I felt this just had to be a painting. As luck would have it, I just happened to have a bunch of other frogs around the house and so, I made a composition, as I usually do, setting it up like a still life. Do a drawing, cut it up and that became the basis for the painting. This is painted oil on wood relief. Again, cut from wood that ranges from a quarter inch up to an inch thick. And this was a very complicated piece to make. There are a lot of areas where I was stacking and moving the wood and trying to get it to work. Over here, overlapping in a lot of ways. Plus, there is a ton of detail. So, this was a particularly challenge for me but, it was just so much fun. The ultimate image, I think, is kind of great. So, this is talking about love. The complications and the feelings that one gets of being a little overwhelmed but, yet happy.
