Crossing the Line Painting by Carolyn Oberst - as part of the series on arts by GeoBeats. Hi, I am Carolyn Oberst and this is a very recent painting of mine called "Crossing the Line". The inspiration are these two argyle sock dolls, a rabbit, and a duck that I have abstracted from. So what I do is I do a drawing and then I take the drawing and once I have decided that I like the drawing I put it up on the wall and I trace the shapes onto heavier gessoed paper. In order to paint on paper you need to gesso it first. I make all the shapes, I cut them out, and then I put it back on the wall to paint. Then I tape everything onto the wall and then I start painting. And once I have the piece painted, then I glue it all together. Now, what happens when I start painting is I make changes. So the original drawing which was underneath to start with gets changed. But, I want to have a drawing that is a document of the work, so after I have finished the painting I actually take the changes and I change the original drawing so that the drawing then matches the painting. So this is the drawing of how the painting ended up not the drawing of how it started out.
