The Peruvian Amazon basin is a high risk malaria area. More than half of the reported 64,000 malaria cases in Peru in 2007 occurred in this region.

The nets were distributed in a number of villages along the Upper Maranon River and its tributaries, including the villages of Napuruka, Sachapapa, Athulapa, Palestina, Belen, Ajachim, Chapis, Borja and Jerusalen, to achieve blanket coverage of all sleeping spaces.

Malaria education and correct net usage were an important part of the distribution process.
