Indonesia is keen for its controversial elite military force, the Kopassus, to once again receive training in the United States.

The Kopassus was banned from training there after the passage of a 1997 US law that prohibited contact with units alleged to have committed human rights violations.

Now the Indonesian government says it has taken action to stem alleged abuses by Kopassus members, but rights groups disagree.

Al Jazeera's Step Vaessen reports from Jakarta on the controversy.
