Wave of attacks kill over 100 in Iraq

Local residents of Baghdad's Washash district wake Monday morning to wreckage and rubble still littering the streets, after a car bomb blast the previous day killed five and wounded 17 more.
Sunday was the bloodiest day yet in Iraq this year, with more than 100 killed across the country.
Here in the poor, Shi'ite district of Sadr City, 12 were killed and 35 others wounded in another car bomb attack.
(SOUNDBITE)(Arabic) UNIDENTIFIED LOCAL RESIDENT, SAYING:
"It is the work of the terrorists. We do not know who is behind such acts. Some are blaming the Shi'ites while others are blaming the Sunnis. But we do not know. We, the innocent people are paying the price."
Late Sunday night, a car bomb exploded here, outside of a busy cafe in the Shi'ite district of Shula, killing nine people and wounding 39.
The violence came after Iraq's fugitive Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi was sentenced to death.
The sentencing for Hashemi, a senior Sunni politician, and the spike in violence threatens to stoke sectarian tensions in Iraq.
