Danny Draper - A Good Rain Fell

A good rain fell, muddied waters,
Pooled in my head, fixed and assimilated
Discord with earth and breath
Vanished, estranged by night,
Teased expectation from the ether,
Will' the wisp as stroke and kiss
Seduction roots in minds malignant
Deny the axiom of blinding day
Succumb unto the strangers' charm
Imagined success is ecstasy's betrayal
Bitter juice from exotic climes
Lured by glowing reviews, but fickle calm,
Broken fruit tasted and rejected
Brown skin sloughed onto indifferent ground
Sullen as lost beauty's poison
Beyond the reach of starved limbs, numb,
Quenched to impoverished core
On the brink of extinction
Without resource in store or future
Alone dreading preservation, ambivalent to
Meagre succour prolonged privation
Curse the pale new sky, each mourn,
Down pour drown and flush it all
Scour horizons, cleanse the struggle skin
Dim probation of wretched halfway frame
Troubled bones in an unmarked delta flee,
Ebbs the tide, flows a river, beats the sea.
