The Stories Behind the Tweets, hosted by William Parra, seeks to open a window to the world, to get to the bottom of stories larger than 140 characters. Today we travel from Holbox Island on the Mexican Caribbean, to the town of El Salado in Colombia, then on to Bahía dos Gatas in Cape Verde. The Holboxians are struggling against developers who plan to turn their island paradise into a tourist development and have used every trick in the book to get the islanders to sign away their land rights. At risk are the people themselves, the mangrove roots that defend the island, and the endangered whale shark that has been swimming in nearby waters for millions of years. Next we visit a community that suffered the biggest massacre perpetrated by paramilitary forces against a civilian population in Colombia– El Salado. After the attack in February of 2000, everyone left, but two years later, people decided to return to their town where they are now building a thriving community. Our last stop is Bahía Das Gatas on the urban island of San Vicente in Cape Verde. Although 95% of the island population lives in the city of Mindelo, once a year they return to the beautiful beach. The first Bahía Das Gata Festival, inspired by Woodstock, was held in August 1984 and has become a yearly tradition attracting some of the finest musicians in Africa and beyond. teleSUR
