Protesters waved Confederate flags as a statue of Jefferson Davis, the Civil War president of the Confederate States of America, was removed from Mid-City, New Orleans, in the early morning of May 11.

Plans to remove the statue were approved by the city council in 2015, but delayed due to court appeals.
