The USGS’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported two new volcanic vents opening on Tuesday, May 8, with all residents of the Lanipuna Gardens subdivision in Puna ordered to evacuate.
Evacuations were ordered in recent days in the neighboring subdivision, Leilani Estates.
Both vents continued to release hazardous gases late on May 8, according to the Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency.
At least 26 homes in Leilani Estates have been destroyed by lava flows that followed a May 4 earthquake near the Kilauea volcano.
