Builder Climbs Pipe to Rescue Woman From Burning Building in Yangon

A builder who scaled a burning building in Yangon, Myanmar, to save a girl trapped on a window sill on Saturday, May 5, has been hailed as a hero.

Myanmar’s Eleven Media Group reported that the fire started in the offices of a travel agency before spreading to neighboring buildings near Yangon’s Sule Pagoda.

This video of the rescue shows people trying to escape the smokes and flames by perching on windows sills and air conditioning units. In the street below local residents worked to build a scaffold to reach people stranded by the flames while one man scaled a pipe to help one of the victims to climb to safety.

According to local news report, the climber was identified as Pyae Zar Ni Nwe who works at Naing Group Holding construction site. Pyae Zar Ni Nwe and four other construction workers involved in the rescue have been praised on Burmese social media for their bravery with video of the incident attracting 1.8 million views.
