1 Once there was a beautiful celestial maiden called Madhura who had observed Somvar Vrat to marry Lord Shiva.

2 She once decided to visit Mount Kailash after completing her fast to please him. However, Goddess Parvati wasn’t around during her visit.

3 The goddess felt offended when she came back and cursed the Apsara to turn into a frog for charming and luring her husband in her absence.

4 Lord Shiva calmed his agitated wife and consoled Madhura by blessing her with the boon of becoming a beautiful woman who will marry a great valorous king.

5 As a result of Parvati’s curse, Madhura then turned into a frog and resided in a forest well for twelve years.

6 Meanwhile, an Asura king called Mayasura and his wife, who longed for a daughter and so they performed months of penance to please Lord Shiva.

7 Later Mayasura rescues Madhura, who had by then transformed into a beautiful girl child from the same well.

8 The couple believed that Lord Shiva had answered their prayers and so they gratefully adopted her as their own daughter and named her Mandodari.

9 In her later life, Mandodari grew up into a beautiful princess who got married to Ravana, one of Shiva’s adherent devotees.
